What if by looking exactly where we have many times before, we could uncover something new?

Something strange, something beautiful, both. Empty urban spaces can sometimes be regarded as stale and forgettable, but there’s juice amid the in-between.

These images, selected for ‘EXTRA SCOOP’ from my ongoing body of work Sorbet Weather, seek to document unseen moments, that repetitiously fall through the cracks.

While composing images, I look to distill a scene down to the parts that serve a function, while eliminating unnecessary noise. What is left out is equally important as what is kept. Rearranging elements like moveable pieces to fit. Deliberately mashing the perspective to create a flattening effect.

By using these methods, could new structures be fashioned from darkness rather than light? Instead of using shadows to hint at, or emphasise a subject, why not make them the subject? These figmental structures are not only impermanent, they never existed to begin with. Even if you walk the same beaten paths of your neighbourhood, I guarantee extraordinary sights continue to lie waiting. ‘EXTRA SCOOP’ can be viewed as an invitation - to a revised way of seeing.
